La Via Campesina
La Via Campesina represents an estimated 200 million farmers, landless workers, rural women, and indigenous peoples across 81 countries. Founded in 1993, it coined the concept of food sovereignty — the right of peoples to define their own food and agriculture systems — which has become a foundational principle in international food politics. La Via Campesina campaigns against industrial agriculture, land grabbing, free trade agreements, and GMOs, while promoting agroecology, seed sovereignty, and land reform. It is one of the most significant examples in existence of transnational democratic governance: millions of people across the world coordinating around shared principles without a state.
