MST — Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra

The Garden The Assemblies

The MST (Landless Workers' Movement) was formally founded in 1984 and has grown into one of the world's largest social movements, with hundreds of thousands of families in organised settlements. MST occupies large landholdings not fulfilling their social function under Brazilian law, negotiates land reform, and builds collective communities practising agroecology and food sovereignty. Settlements run their own schools, health systems, and cooperative enterprises — making MST one of the most ambitious experiments in democratic self-governance in the contemporary world. It is a central actor in the global food sovereignty movement and La Via Campesina.
